Condom breaking?

Sorry if this is dumb but can you feel it break? Is there a way you know its broken without seeing it?  Or do you only notice like after you see the actual condom?

The condom has broken on us once, I didn't feel no difference but my husband did and right away informed me about it

My boyfriend stops and checks the condom a lot. My doctor also said my only birth control option is the copper iud (because of my medication) and my boyfriend says I don’t have to get it. So he’s just super careful with the condoms. We always check the condom after. 
The diaphragm could be an option too but not where I currently live.
