Trouble Talking

I've noticed my kiddo isn't talking yet. he says/babbles mama and dada but everything else is just little babbles. I've read that it's too early to intervene but my Dr says if he's not saying anything by may that shed like him to do speech therapy. He also gags on his foods a lot, which is getting better but he can only eat tiny pieces. Could this be connected? Also any tips on helping him with speech? my 3 year old daughter was definitely saying words at this age...
