Shaving.. Down there

So it seems like in today's world, women who are sexually active have to have no hair down there. Some guys have even told me that if a girl was too hairy, they wouldn't sleep with them. I've tried shaving before but after the hair is gone, I just get a lot of red bumps (that can't be attractive either). How are you supposed to get your who-ha nice and smooth without irritating it?
