Ring question!

My hubby wants to get a ring that's kind of rubbery like because of work and how his fingers swell and his ring cuts into his finger. My question is, would that make it less like a wedding ring and more like just a fashion accessory? I really like him wearing the real thing. Not a fan of the rubbery ones.
