Personal experience.... every relationship I've had that needed a "break" failed in the end.

Hell no. If you're on a break then you aren't together. You're either together or your not. I've never once seen someone on a break that it worked out for them in the end.

breaks ddo cause incompatible relationships to be drawn out longer though because taking a break can make people miss each other and tolerate each other better
however they eventually will find themselves butting heads again
in a rare circumstance taking a bbreak might aallow two younger people to grow up enough and actually reunite as compatible adults,
but the odds are as rare as finding another compatible adult in general 
if you’re in a monogamous relationship and your partner needs a break, it’s not really going to help or fix whatever problem your relationship was having because bbreaks don’t change people

I think it's a cop out!!! You're either in or out and if you're not willing to work together to work things out then you shouldn't be together.
