Period question

So I've had my period since before sixth grade year and I'm a junior now but for years this has happened. During my period I always have a blood smell that's kinda gross when I'm in the bathroom and pull my pad away. My Dr says its normal but my boyfriend and me have been intimate for for awhile always outside of my period but tomorrow were going out alone to go fishing and I'm sure something is going to happen. I told him I'm on my period and he said he didn't care that it'd b OK but I'm embarrassed about the smell. Any suggestions?
