Belly button piercing

So I’ve had my belly button pierced for a little over a year. However, it’s never fully healed. There’s this little bit of skin on the inside that sticks out, and it sounds kinda gross but it hurts to try to pull it out, so I just leave it alone. It’s not infected, but it just won’t heal. I’m debating taking it out, but my boyfriend really likes it and so do I :/ any suggestions on how to get it to fully heal?
