Herpes Simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) is more associated with cold sores, oral lesions and oral sores. HSV-1 can contactes as genital herpes, during oral, Vaginal or anal sex with someone who has the virus. Majority of the population who has herpes do not have symptoms, or experience one outbreak and go years without any sx. 
HSV-2 is associated as genital herpes but just as HSV-1 it can appear as sores in/on the mouth or on the genitalia. 
Herpes is a Sexually Transmitted infection the is transmitted by having contact with the infected SKIN (even when no sx are present) Shedding (the time HSV is active, and can cause someone else to be infected) is often without sx. 
The male condoms don’t really protect against herpes, because if he gets sores on his balls or pubic area ( area where the condom does not cover) and a female (/male) has contact with it during sex they can get it.
