im sorry, i lost someone i loved to an opiod addiction. it starts,off for most as pain medication precribed by a doctor. that pain is real to a lot who get addicted. i blame the doctors. then when they try to stop they get so sick... its a disease, they dont want to live that way.

It starts as a choice and ends as a disease. EVERYONE knows the dangers of drugs (street or prescription). A good doctor should not prescribe a hectic painkiller for more than a few days for this very reason, as well as the package inserts generally warning against long term use as well, and a person 'just trying' heroin or something should accept the fact that it can turn them into an addict. They do drug awareness from preschool age. So it's a conscious choice to try the drugs (or go from doctor to doctor looking for a prescription) but once you're hooked it's a disease that's hard to escape.

i feel like the initial dose of the drug is a choice (no one put a gun to your head), but at the same time people with addictive personalities don't have an off switch. Do i feel bad for addicts? hell no! i have done a wide variety of drugs. some of them only take 3 days to feel the physical addiction, but i decided that was not how i was going to go down. so yes its a choice but at the same time you have to be strong minded enough to make the decision to either not start or to stop when its getting out of control.
