Is being judgemental always bad?

A few weeks ago in class, we were having a discussion about how we should never be judgemental. One class member stated that sometimes being judgemental can keep you safe, so it’s not always a bad thing.
Thoughts?

That person is correct. You can say no one should judge a million times and it wont do much. People will ALWAYS judge. Certain things you should keep to yourself.

I'm going to judge somebody who is being racist, or homophobic, or sexist, or generally being a complete dick.

Depends. 
For example I lock the doors when in the car at night when I see anyone who looks dodgy which is almost everyone in my town 😂 and that’s to keep my SO and I safe. 
A lot of the youth in my town try to get into peoples cars when we’re driving. 
So it’s easier for me to be judgemental and assume these people are dodgy because well if you’re trying to get into peoples cars, you’re dodgy and I don’t wanna risk it

Instinctual judgement is not something we can just turn off (danger cues, physical attraction etc) generally- yes we should consciously put in an effort to be less judgmental toward each other & ourselves

I think it really depends on how we are using the term judgmental. If it’s applied across the board to an entire group of people, then I think it’s extremely problematic. If it’s situational, I think it depends. I’ve learned to trust my gut instinct. We have those innate responses to situations for a reason. If I’m suddenly made uncomfortable by a person or situation, yes, I’ll be judgmental in that moment. But for me it’s more about the total circumstances. I work in a fairly rough neighborhood. If I’m walking out to my car at night and there are people arguing in the parking lot I’m going back inside to find someone to walk out with.

One one hand, I think it's wrong, not necessarily to judge others, but to condemn others, but sometimes I think it's okay to look at someone, and judge for ourselves, their actions and their behavior and use that to kinda help us decide for ourselves what to do and what not to do, for our sake. Like if someone is making bad decisions left and right, I think it's okay to judge for ourselves whether or not their behavior is appropriate and then use that sort of a driving force, or a learning tool to help us make better decisions for ourselves, and for the people around us, while still refraining from judging that person, and going as far enough to condemn them, as in saying, "Oh, you're going to hell for that. You're a terrible person. Shame on you," and blah blah blah blah.

How do you deem someone judgmental? By judging them.

No, in the sense of self preservation assuming that someone else could be a danger to you may keep you safe. I don’t like to put myself in situations where I am alone with a stranger and out of contact with others.
For example, my office hires a cleaning service where the staff works independently—like one person per area—and it is frequently a rotating schedule of people who the service sends so there is rarely a person you can recognize on a regular basis...People have had small items stolen but never able to 100% blame one individual and just tell us to lock stuff up or take it home. I don’t like to be the last person in the office or leave another employee alone by themselves. Logically I know not all people are dangerous, but instinctively I don’t have the trust to give 100% so I choose not to be alone with people I don’t trust

It's how I choose everyone I hang around with and it makes my life better for it :) It keeps me safe from scammers and worse. So no, judgement is a great thing in many cases.

Yes judging is always okay. And same for the person who opposes your views.
