when should a letter grade be rounded?

OKAY LISTEN TO THIS i have a 79.75% in a class and my professor didn’t round it up to a B?!?!? Is this fair or do i dare ask for a B????

At my university the cut off is defined at 80-89.9% for a B and a C is from 70-79.9. So by my school's standards no you wouldn't be rounded up to a B even if you asked. Look at your university calendar or the website and see what they define grades as. But, most schools will round to 1 decimal place which would still give you a 79.8 which isn't a B. It sucks but they have to follow their rules as technically the university calendar is a legal document.

Is it fair? Yes it is. You got a C. You can ask nicely for your professor to round it up. If they don’t, nothing you can do. I had tough ones that didn’t round when I was .05 away from another grade.

Ask, but go in with a reason you think it should be rounded up (since the prof doesn’t have to do it). So say something like, “my attendance has been perfect/I always participate in class discussions/I struggled at the beginning, but I worked hard and the second half of the semester I did much better”...whatever you can say like that that is demonstrably true.

I would look at the Syllabus honestly. My university has a definitive grade policy but each professor is different. One class I had a 89.92% and my professor didn’t round it up but another professor rounded up my 89.4% to an A. It’s always up to the professor, so read your syllabus and then ask :)

Ask for a B! Most professors do already round especially with that number but remember they aren’t obligated to.
