Do your rights matter, if you don’t “do anything wrong”?

Spin off from the “is the government watching you” post. 
Most answers are similar to “i don’t care if I’m being watched because I don’t do anything wrong.” 
It’s a violation of your rights to be watched/recorded without your consent. 
Do your rights still matter if you don’t do anything wrong?

Of course our rights matter even if we aren’t doing anything! 
Just because we aren’t committing any crimes, doesn’t mean the government still has the right to invade our privacy!

Yes. Those rights exist for a reason. Just because someone “thinks” they’re not doing anything wrong, doesn’t mean the government can’t abuse the information they’re getting. 
I may joke about the NSA guy clocking in and out of work when my phone randomly vibrates, but it’s still a very serious thing. I don’t want my rights violated even if I feel as if I’m doing nothing wrong. 
Watch Snowden. It might be filmed to make him the good guy, but it sheds some light. He’s still on the run in other countries. 
I learned a bit about what the government does when I was active duty and getting my information warfare device. That was just a GLIMPSE of the shady shit every single government does. It freaks me out.

Yes. Because right and wrong can be subjective and change not only over time, but also by who is in power. Anyone who thinks the American or other Western governments will always leave you alone unless you break a law should take a hard look at the McCarthy Era. Or history in general. Our rights are essential to freedom and liberty. Anyone who doesn’t wish to protect their rights now because “I’m not doing anything wrong” or “I’m boring, they won’t care” doesn’t realize how dangerous that mindset can be.

Our rights do matter, whether or not we’re doing something wrong. However, the government does far more than we’re all aware of. And I feel while it may seem like some privacy rights are being taken advantage of, it’s also for our safety. It’s not just like “big brother” is sitting there listening to your conversations. There isn’t enough man power for all that. There are highly intelligent computer systems that basically scan through conversations and information on the internet and recordings, looking for specific words or topics that would be considered threatening to our security.

I think the people who make those statements about why not give up our info if we didn’t do anything wrong just don’t really care about the issue. It’s not their issue, they are focused on other issues, you know? Because I also find those conversations tend to be short and then we are onto another topic.

A few in my family work in intelligence and we joke when we hear clicks on the phone but they are the most hardline believers in personal privacy because they know what's going on. I absolutely hate the saying "if you do nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about." The fact that anybody (strangers, hackers, govt) can know everything about you and try to use it against you is truly scary.
