is open concept overrated?

Question

How realistic is living in an open concept house with little kids? I always thought I wanted that but now living in our craftsman style, I'm so thankful I can close off my husband and daughter's mess in one part of the house.

I love that open concept means I can cook while my son is playing in his corner of the living room area. it'd be a lot more either shifting him back and forth or confining him to some kind of baby jail if we had separate rooms. but we use furniture to define areas of the room to make it feel more separate

i hate open concept. i'm sort of a neurotic freak lol - I get very, very annoyed by sound and get overwhelmed by too much motion. So if my boyfriend and son want to watch tv or play really rambunctiously, I like being able to go in a different room and tune them out for a while and have some alone time.

We rented a small open concept house for a little while and it was a nightmare. I couldn't keep my baby out of the kitchen, which led to temper tantrums because he wanted snacks. In our current house we can close him off from the kitchen and it has been so much better. I love open concept in theory...not so much in real life.

I don't like open concept. both my parents and my brother and his wife built open concept.
my parents house is so freaken echoe I get a headache every time I'm there. They don't have carpet anywhere, or decorative curtains, and leather couches so sound isn't absorbed.
I haven't been into my brother's house yet, they just moved, but I imagine it's very similar.
I like having a wall between my kitchen and entrance/ living room (there's a wall to block off the entrance from the living room, and a small landing when you walk in, so you have stayed going up and down). 
my dining room is open to the living room, but we have carpet in the living room. 
I would build something similar to what we have now, if we get a chance.
