My doctor overdosed me on insulin
Recently I posted here about being admitted into the hospital with severely low blood sugar levels. Here is a follow up on that and some background info. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 30 weeks. My doctor wrote me a prescription and told me I need to start taking it immediately. He had written me a script for 32 of humulin R U500 in the morning and 64 units of NPH, 24 units of the RU500 before dinner and then 24 units of NPH before bed. When I picked up my insulin pens from the pharmacy I noticed that the RU500 pen only went in increments of 5...I thought it was bizarre that my doctor wanted me to take odd amounts...So I called the pharmacy because my doctors office was closed by then and I could t get ahold of the on call. The pharmacist said to “round down to the closest even number”...I did this until the next day when I could get ahold of my doctors office. I told him I thought this was strange that he wrote me a script I’m odd numbers and also that the NPH pen maxed out at 60 and he wanted me to take 64 units just in the morning. I voiced my concerns about this seeming like ALOT of insulin. He said it was fine and to continue to take it. Things went alright for a couple of days and then my blood sugar levels started going so low that I could not get them up. We called the doctor several times
Over the course of this and he seemed totally unconcerned....My boyfriend insisted I go to the hospital went my BSL’s were falling into the 40-60 range about wouldn’t go up no matter what I did. I gathered up all my insulin to show the hospital staff. They also seemed unconcerned. They hooked me up to a glucose IV and said I should be fine. After draining a bag of essentially sugar I was still at a 50 so they kept
me over night by my doctors request and said that he would visit in the morning. He showed up the next morning and I asked him WHY this could be happening to me. He said it’s totally unexplainable and he had no idea. He said stay off the insulin for the rest of the weekend until my appointment on Tuesday. Shortly after they sent a “diabetes expert” up to my room to educate me on GD and my insulin. I showed her my insulin prescription, dosage and pens...she acted as if everything was totally normal. I was shortly discharged....it took about 4 days for my BSLs to return to normal. At my appointment this Tuesday my Dr rushed in the room gave me no more than 60 seconds of his time. looked at my sugar levels from the weekend and then said he wanted to cut my dosage back by about 25 percent...I had to REMIND him that I wasn’t taking any insulin right now....he said then we can see how it goes until my up upcoming appointment this Friday. Well today I had to attend a diabetes education class. The educator told me she was aware of my hospital
Stay and asked me for the dosages that my dr had me on. I told her the numbers of NPH and regular. She said “WOW that is quite a lot of insulin”. She said she thought it was bizarre when I told her my fast acting Insulin pen only went in dosage increments of 5...She asked to see my insulin pens and script. I showed her and she said “omg, he wrote you a prescription for RU500”...I told her I have no idea what the numbers mean. She said “let me put it to you this way, I am so glad you are here and alright”. “Normal people take RU100 insulin and this is RU500 which is 5 TIMES more concentrated than normal insulin!” She told me that my blood sugars were so low was because my doctor had me on dangerously high levels of insulin and I was overdosing myself 4 TIMES A DAY with 5X the amount of insulin....Idk what to do right now. My doctors negligence almost killed me and my baby for that matter!!! The whole hospital staff and my doctor couldn’t or didn’t tell me why this happened even though I provided them with all the info needed to see that I was overdosing on insulin!!!! Now I’m 33 weeks pregnant and I feel like it’s too late to
Switch doctors but I’m scared to go back or take any more prescriptions. I’m contemplating on seeing a lawyer. Idk what to do 😡😬😭😬😡
