Sympathy for drug addicts?

My dad passed away due to heroin addiction, which he started taking due to having severe clinical depression and wanted to take something that would help him to feel okay again. The picture below was me and him the day before he overdosed on herion.

He was probably the nicest human in the world, he was just amazing and would never hurt anyone, and he just wanted to be happy, so he did anything possible to do so. It was a bad decision, but I guess we all make mistakes in order to feel happier. So here’s my topic of debate:

Do you guys sympathise with drug addicts, or not?? Explain your opinions below :)
