Cults?

Question

So I was looking for peoples opinions on cults? Do you think they are a part of religion? Do you think some were originally set up with good purposes and morals?  Or is it brainwashing and potentially dangerous? 
Bonus question- has anyone ever been involved in a cult or knows a relative that has?

Alot of cults use religion but they twist it to fit their manifesto. They usually tend to prey on the weak minded and they tend to manipulate. There may be some somewhere that was started with good intentions... but I personally don't believe most are.

Some religions are Cults from,the get go and others become Cults. It definitely is brainwashing and controlling of its members. I don't think anyone should feel forced to do anything they're not comfortable doing whiles being part of a religion.

I think anyone who heads a cult is a narcissist, using people to fill their own egoic gain. 
The people who become trapped into a cult are but people searching for answers when lost and are easily manipulated for that reason. 
I don't know how I personally feel about cults. They certainly make me uneasy, but potentially illegalizing them going infringe easily on other people's religious freedoms if what we perceive as a cult becomes broad. 
I don't know if they are as prevalent as they seemed to be in the 70-90's.

I think most cults stem from religion, but not all. They tend to morph a belief and make it their own extreme. They prey on the gullible and weak.

So after reading a few articles, I think most reasons are pretty selfish. Either they think they're destined for greatness, they want to engage in poly relationships and child marriages, they want to play God, etc. Like the psychology behind cult mentality is so amazing (bad amazing). By the way, there are multiple "How-To's" on google for starting a cult and I feel like that's so vile

I’m pretty sure I am getting recruited for a cult. My dumb hubby gave his number out to some guy he met at the store and now they want to mentor us and are talking about how we need to meet their mentors 😬

I had a math teacher that was "supposedly" in one. He wouldnt answer anything that had anything to do w the subject. He did say that he would go to a Masonic Temple with a group of men. So I figured he really was lol
