Should you always bring a gift to a baby shower?

So my baby shower was a bit of a mess. My fiancé and I are younger (20s) so our friends aren’t all the most mature. We decided to throw a casual co-ed shower for just friends to celebrate and my MIL is going to have a formal one for family later this month.

We bought all the food, decor, and games. The hope was that the amount we spent on the shower would balance the savings we would get from gifts. It ended up just being us losing a whole lot of money. Like I’m thankful for the gifts we got, some of them were exactly what we wanted. But I would say out of the 40 people who came, 10 brought a gift.

They all ate our food AND brought their own alcohol (and ended up spilling it all over my house). They have jobs, they’re not broke by any means.

It just makes me mad that I spent so much time, effort, and money on an event that pretty much was a total let down. I was running around the whole party setting up, cleaning up, etc.. I feel like I didn’t even get to enjoy it. Plus, only four of my friends showed, the rest were all my fiances : (

So would you be mad? Should a guest always bring a gift to a baby shower?
