how do I beat him at his own game?

Theres this guy who was friend of my friend, when we first saw each other I thought he was really cute and we chatted for a bit but at the time we were dating other people so we stopped talking. A year later, he hits me up. we're both single so we started talking and hanging out. Our mutual friend who is his best friend texts me and was like I see you and telling me things that he told her. So him and I eventually start hanging out alone and then with our mutual friend. Him and I hooked up twice and that's when he got distant like weeks later and all he had to do was be honest so I was texting him and he wasnt really reply so I stop texting him and months went by, then yesterday I passed his house on the way to see family and a couple hours later he texts me out of no where which was weird. He wants to hang out and he apologized and he said the timing was off. I did really like him and we had fun. he'd always pay for everything food movies etc. Now I'm skeptical because I'm thinking he just wants sex and I already told him no sex and he said that's fine. I'm thinking about testing the waters and seeing what his true intentions are. What should I do?
