Period and Pill

So I have followed the directions on the pill, but even before the pill my periods were really irregular. I could go a month or two without having one and then BAM there it was. (I knew I wasn’t pregnant since I hadn’t had sex).

I have been on the pill for six months and my periods are still irregular. Not as bad as they were but I can get my period during week 2 of the pill instead of the placebo week. Then the next period waits until my placebo week on my next pack.

Is the pill working? Does anybody else have a similar situation?
