Apartment search with bf

My bf decided to move with me to san Marcos where i go to school its such a small twn that the places fill with college students fast were left with expensive apartment 800 and above or really disgusting apartment for 650 which is not worth even worth that.  I brought up the idea of roomates so many apartments are sonice  here for like 500-600 but with a roommate, my bf is not down at all but i dont see what the big deal is, bad idea for couple to stay with someone else or is he being a baby
