If your SOs parent was in the ICU would you go out of town without them?

Depends on how serious the situation is. 
My dad spent the better part of a year in and out of ICU. DH had a business trip that I told him to go on. We made arrangements with his work to bring him home should a serious issue arise and off he went

Yes. If it was his mother we'd visit so she knows we did and couldn't start shit. If it was his father we'd put ourselves up in a hotel near by to help him out and be there for him for a bit.
