Husband workouts and toddler safety

Erin

Need some opinions on how you guys would handle this...

My husband is an amazing man and incredible father to our almost 2 year old. I have a demanding job, but he works somewhat part-time and will transition to full time stay-at-home once baby #2 arrives in January. He provides the majority of childcare, embraces his role, and never complains. Our son adores him. I’m very lucky!

He is a personal trainer and strength coach by education and training, and a very good one. Staying fit and active are very important to him, and he’s built a gym in our basement/garage. Currently he works 530am-2pm, then goes straight to pick up our son from daycare. Here’s where I have a problem. He brings our son down to the basement for him to “play” while he does his daily workout. I’m talking heavy weight lifting. He brings toys and books for our son, but obviously the weights are much more interesting. I came home yesterday, and my husband was back squatting a ton of weight while our son was just a few feet behind him, wide eyed. My husband knew he was there and said “watch out buddy” but still...

You may be picturing my husband as a clueless meat head, but he’s really not. He’s very thoughtful and careful, and in every other aspect is kind of a safety freak. He always very carefully racks his weights or rests them on the ground, never drops or anything. Still, I worry that his need to maintain his fitness is clouding his judgment a little. What if our son rams into him and he loses control of the weights? I feel afraid to bring it up because it would seem like I’m trying to take away his favorite hobby while he’s doing the majority of the child rearing by himself.

How would y’all handle it? Am I overreacting?
