Best age gap between 1st and 2nd child?

Question

My son is about to be a year old in just a few weeks, and we are starting to figure out when would be the best time for us to start trying for number 2.
 I know this should be what's best for us, but I'm just curious to see what others think, after experiencing the age gaps themselves. any advice or comments help.

I have a gap of 3 ½ years between my first and second and my third baby is due when my second child will be 3 ½... one nice thing is that from about 2 or 2 ½ kids become so much easier... they can do more, communicate more, enjoy things like bike riding and scootering etc, they normally sleep through the night and so on... so it meant we had this blissful rest for a year or so before my second was born and we are in that tine of rest now before the third child is due. As much as I love it though, I think a 2 1/2 or 3 year gap might be better as you still get that break but the kids get to enjoy being closer in age. Unfortunately it took us many months each time to fall pregnant so it put those plans out a bit!
