Epidural

Im a FTM due next month.I want to have an unmedicated birth,but at the same time considering the possibility of having an epidural if my contractions are very painfull.But the problem I don't know exactly what is the role of an epidural,my question is does the epidural makes you have a 100% painless labor/delivery or it just reduce the pain?Thank you
