There is a group thats been set up you should check out. If it's not under control it is tough. With medication and once you get your dose right you are fine. 
There are also some very good books on the subject that I'd recommend looking into. 
Finally trust your gut. If something feels off it probably is. Not all doctors work in the same info either with this so make sure you ask all the questions and don't be afraid to get a second opinion.
