men...help me!!

so my boyfriend bought an engagement ring, he keeps smirking and joking and he also told my friend (a little concert we went to) when he was a little tipsy, he bought a ring (I over heard but wasn't suppose to!). he keeps asking things like "how much should I spend on your ring?" and "man, I think I should wait awhile to make more payments on a ring!" but he's joking...lol so how long after you buy a ring, do you think he'll pop the question? general time frame! also, why did he ask me how much he should spend??? very awkward question to try to answer
