Can I get my hair colored if its damaged?

I havent had a professional hair cut or color in almost 4 years. I've been letting it grow out and I've color it a dark box dye once a year. I'm bored and want something different. 
I'm wondering if I can even get my hair colored if there is dark brown box dye already on it.

I mean ... yes, you can get it color corrected. There will probably be some damage, especially because of the box dye and not having trims in between.

If you’re trying to go lighter you’ll need to bleach it which will damage it more. And color may not stick the way you want it to if it’s damaged
