Baby name too common? 😞

Soooo I love unique and different names. I have a toddler son whose name isn’t common and I get tons of compliments. Well I’ve had the name “Penelope” on my name list for yearssssss now, I love that name! I originally loved “Persephone” but my fiancé thinks it’s ugly 😒 So we decided to name our August baby Penelope Autumn. BUT I’ve been hearing the name more and more AND I just saw in the Baby Names group a discussion on the name that it’s a very common/popular name right now. The whole reason I’ve loved that name was because it wasn’t really common and now it’s become a popular name! Should we change her name or keep it?? I love the name but would hate to see 5 other “Penelope’s” in her class

Every time I see Persephone, I think of “purse phone” lol (I know that isn’t how it’s pronounced).

I grew up with 8 other Michelle’s in my middle school class alone, even more in my high school class. I turned out okay. We are naming our daughter Olivia along with 45% of all the baby girls being born right now. If you love the name who cares how popular it is. That’s a very silly reason not to name your child a name that you Absolutely love. It’s not the end of the world.

popularity of a name also depends on where you live. the name could be super popular in the south but not the north and so on.. that's something to also think about. I think it's a lovely name! I usually like different unpopular names also, but as it has turned out My oldest is named Derek, after his dad, second Quinton (thought it was uncommon for our area) and this little one will be William (after my brother and I'll call him Liam for short) I dont think William or Liam are very common for our area but they are both on the top 10 baby names for this year. picked the name you love! or that has meaning to you regardless of anything else. I think you'll regret it if you dont.

One of my friends has a son the name my husband and I picked out 4 years ago if we ever had a boy, and her son is only 6 months old. I’m sure my mom and some family that know her would be a bit confused if our August baby (team green) gets named that, because they know her - even though it is currently a top 10 boys name in the US. But my mom told me (sometime when I was younger) that I was supposed to have a different name, and that her bridesmaid had a girl a few months before and used the name she wanted (it was at least top 25 the year of my birth, so is mine), to the point I don’t identify with my name. It was the “back up” that they came up with at the hospital to give me the same initials as planned. I went by my last name from 7th grade through college because my first name wasn’t “me”. Just thought it was a different perspective on it all.

Can’t say I’ve ever met anyone with the name although I have seen it a couple of times on baby forums lately , mainly due to the trend of older names coming back into fashion. I highly doubt you will end up with several in the same class ! If you like the name stick with it !

I'm the same way. And personally I haven't heard that name at all . I've never met anyone named Penelope. I've seen a few tv characters but that's it. I think it also trends based on region. Something popular in Oregon may not be popular in Nebraska. We're naming our girl Jocelyn for the same reasons, we had Addison picked out for years but it's become much too popular. I will also say I don't like common ones bc my name is Kasandra and there were always 2-3 in the same class as me but now as an adult I seldomly encounter that.
