Neighbor took our fence down??

Question

We have a fenced backyard- yesterday I look outside and see our fence is gone! It looks like they may be rebuilding the fence at the house behind us bc I see lumber in their backyard... but I can’t let my pets out now in the backyard! We are renting a house but I’m sure our neighbors behind us who removed the fence didn’t know that and they didn’t even check with us... just super weird to me! Does anyone know if this is legal?

Depends. If it’s on the property line then it’s shared. If the homeowner refused to participate, they could’ve put it on their own property. In which case, they can do as they please.

Not sure where you are but I'm sure the laws are more or less the same all over. Where I am half the wall belongs to me and half to my neighbour. Taking it down would be theft / malicious damage to property and possibly even trespassing. Definitely get your landlord involved.

The fence might’ve been on their property which in that case would mean they could do what they want. But ask your landlord

Honestly I would talk to them about the pets not being able to be let out. But I wouldn’t get too mad! Your getting a new fence. And also upsetting neighbors could be more of a hassle in the long run!

They should have let you know. Contact your landlord, maybe they informed him/her and failed to tell you. We once had a neighbor that put up a new fence in the front yard. He informed us in advanced. But after it was up tried to get us to pay for what on our side. He even approached the neighbor that was on his other side and tried to get her to pay too. My dad and that other neighbor told him off. Especially because he put the fence directly on our property and not where the two properties meet. It blocked any meters that utility companies would have had to check. He was told by code enforcement to take it down because it was on our property and it was built poorly. It wasn’t a regular chain link or wood fence. It was meant to look fancy but really it looked trashy. When we moved from there, it was still up. There were other issues with them. For some reason his wife felt a need to compete with me. I guess because I was single and free to do what I want. No one in that area really liked them. From my understanding they moved away from there but I don’t know about the fence

umm they had to let you know or ask if they could do that. that is removing from others property if you can call your landlord and let him/her know what happened

The fence is technically shared property. There are real estate laws about this. They needed to definitely ask the owner of the home. And the fact that it’s a rental as well is an issue. Tell your landlord.
