Would you choose a family name over a name that you just happened to like?

Question

We’ve loved the name Jack for our first son before we even got married. It’s the name of both my husband’s grandfathers and my Granny’s brother. I love that it’s a family name but don’t love how common it is, or that it’s very short. 
Over the past 3-4 months, we’ve added the name Roman in to the mix. We’re big travelers and our favorite trip to date was Rome. Also, it’s a name more common in Russia / Eastern Europe, and our last name sounds quite Russian. 
No matter what, his middle name will be James after my father.

Since James is definitely going to be the middle name I would go with Roman. Jack James doesn't sound good together in my opinion. You can always save Jack for a middle name for another baby or go with Jacqueline if you have a girl.

We have a rule that if we don’t absolutely love the family name, even if it’s for the middle, then we won’t use it. I don’t understand why people settle on family names that they don’t really love! 
I would use Roman since you are already using James as your family middle name. I agree with others that Jack James doesn’t sound great. Roman James sounds perfect!

Roman James flows way better than Jack James. We are using Jack Michael for a boy, Michael after my late father and Jack because my husband and his 3 best friends all have short J names lol.

So we are having a boy in December! We knew we wanted Sawyer from high school which is my moms maiden name. So he will be named after my grandfather. My husband wanted William for a middle name after his dad. I love it but we had the nickname SJ picked out before we knew the gender. We finally decided on Sawyer Jack William Roy! Jack isn’t a family name. I’d say one name should be after either family or just have some type of special meaning. 
Like if our baby was a girl....she was going to be Charleigh because my husband and I met at the movies and saw Charlie St.Cloud!

I'm interested in giving my children their own names! Though coincidentally my boy pick, Milo, ended up having been the name of my grandma's favorite uncle, so it's kind of a family name after all!

My husband is the third, and if this little bean is a boy we plan to carry on the name and make him the fourth. I’m not too excited about it but I also don’t want to be that b*%ch wife who breaks the family tradition. Good luck with what you decide ❤️
