Breastfeeding, irregular periods, and pregnancy

I am still breastfeeding my 11 month old and plan to continue to do so as long as he wants until about 18 months or so. My period came back when he was 8 months old, but it has been very irregular (one month late and then two weeks late). We are hoping to try for baby #2 soon, but unlike before, I don't have a good idea of when/if I'm ovulating.

I'm not super worried about it because I'm not even sure that I'm ready for the second just yet (we are at the get into everything age!). I will go buy ovulation strips if nothing else. But - does anyone have any input/experience with conceiving while breastfeeding?
