My daughter is entering first grade In public school after being homeschooled in K. She’s still learning to read. Will this be an issue?

We’ve worked with her often with reading, but she always loses interest very fast. She can write numbers 1-20. She can count to 100. She knows her alphabet. She can write and recognize the alphabet in upper and lowercase, tell time, knows left from right, basic shapes, and all colors. I don’t want her to feel overwhelmed with first grade, but we are at a point where I can no longer homeschool her.

My son struggles with reading still in public school, they have extra help for his school. He couldn’t say words until he was 2 so he was behind no matter what we did.. he is finally only a reading level behind where he should be since he had extra help.. 
not sure if it’s just Michigan or if it’s every state. But last year I got told every child needs to be at 3rd grade reading level by 3rd grade, or they are going to hold back the kids until they can get up to that level, even if they are in special education classes..

By the end of kindergarten my kiddos (I was a kindergarten teacher) we're able to read and write complete sentences. 2-3 sentence "stories." They were able to recognize and write 0-30 but count by 1s,2s,5s and 10s to 100. So ultimately they were also able to recognize up to 100. We had simple addition and subtraction down. We knew more/less than and started with time telling.  (To the hour or half past the hour.) You should be able to go onto your state's education page and see if she meets all the standards for kindergarten.

I was an elementary teacher before I gave birth to my daughter and became self-employed. I now own an Education Consulting Business from home and work very closely with school districts, textbook companies, and learning resource companies. During my career as a teacher, I taught kindergarten, second, and third grades. I never taught first, but when I taught kindergarten most of my students did not go to first grade being excellent readers. Kindergarten is the year if foundation. Kindergarten teachers work on phonetics, fluency, understanding, vocabulary, and building knowledge. During my time as a kindergarten teacher, I worked on the pillars I listed above and also basic rules if reading such as reading left to right and so on. We read basic passages, but nothing over-the-top. We kept it a kindergarten level. Comprehension is important, but first grade will more upon that. Like I said, most kindergarten students leave kindergarten knowing how to read, but they are not masters. Of course there were those students who were way ahead of others and there were also those students who were behind others. It is quite normal for a student her age to lose interest. Also, first grade is a very important grade for reading. This is the grade that reading is really enforced and all those foundation skills that was taught in kindergarten is being usec6. When I taught second grade, those students (most) entered being really great readers. As for writing numbers, all (well at least most) left kindergarten writing their numbers 1-50, at the minimum. A lot of my students could write beyond that. Of course I am unaware which state you are in so this may differ for you and I also taught at a magnet school. She's good if she can count to 100. I now own an education consulting business from home like I mentioned above. I work very closely with school districts, textbook companies, and learning resource companies. I help k-12 educators implement strategies for student success and also curriculum guides. I am sure your daughter's school district works with education consulting companies to learn these strategies. Also, if they see that your daughter needs significant help in reading or math, most schools have reading specialists and math specialists to help students out with this. I'm sure your baby girl will be just fine. Continue to work with her at home as well because as I used to always tell my students' parents "You are your child's first teacher." I wish your baby girl good luck as she takes on first grade!!! I'm sure she will excel. Another piece of advice, try to research first grade standards for your state.

I’d still practice reading small words with her through the summer or at bedtime but in 1rst grade there is a huge range of abilities in children

I think it depends on where you live. Where I live (Viera,FL) kids get held back if they can’t read by the end of kindergarten. They should also be able to write the numbers through 100 and write basic sentences. I would continue to work with her and if you have concerns maybe she can redo kindergarten in public school.

My sister did online school for kindergarten and now she has to redo it because she still really struggles with letters and we think she may be dyslexic. They may ask you to have her redo kindergarten since all the other kids will be ahead of her and she’s so behind

In California, they start to read simple sentences with sight words at the end of kindergarten. For instance “I see the cat, I see the boy”. If you’re worried i would start practicing kindergarten and first grade sight words and also practice the letter sounds. The teacher can give you sight word resources.
