What does epidural do?

I know it reduces pain right? 
Does it numb you? 
I’m new to this i don’t really have a lot of knowledge about the shot.
 Does it hurt real bad?
 It looks really painful, is it worth it? 
Is trying to go natural better? 
So many questions, I’d love to hear and learn more about this if y’all would share some info 💕

An epidural is essentially an IV for your spine. It blocks pain, but does not block pressure. You will still feel contractions, just not the pain. As far as getting it put in, they do numb you before they give it. The medication they give to block pain can cause itching, but I didn’t mind that as much as I minded the pain.

I got an epidural when i was 7cm dilated and was numb from my stomach down. I didnt feel any contractions or anything was completely numb and when it came to pushing i didnt feel pressure either so i guess its different for everyone. I didnt really hurt when they stuck the needle in either cuz im not really afraid of shots.🤷‍♀️

The only part that was painful was the numbing shot but I was already in pain from contractions and back labor so it wasn’t bad at all. They then stick a catheter near your spine for the medicine to enter through. Those meds will block your nerves so you no longer feel pain. A good epidural will still let you feel pressure but not pain.

no epi is the same. Mine dulled me a bit. I felt every contraction but not as intense. Both my legs felt like they weight 200lbs and if i was on my right side my left leg regained all feeling if i laid on my left side my right leg regained all feeling. If i was sitting up the dullness started at my waist and the more flat i laid down the higher up it went. So like if i was leaning back i could feel the epi move up into my ribs like causing a slight numbing or dulling effect. NOT at all what I thought it would be

it's not a shot, it's a small tube inserted into your spine and give you medicine over time. the effect it has is differnet on everyone. for a good majority of people they are completely numb from about the belly button down. some still feel pressure, some still feel some pain, some feel pain only on half their body, some it doesnt work at all

I got an epidural with both my kids. my first one didn't hurt at all didnt even feel anything but pressure going in. i was numb from the waste down could not move my legs on my own. i started to feel my contractions not painful at all but could feel them they added another medication into the catheter and it went away. I started to feel my contractions agian and it was time to push. people had to hold my legs up for me as I couldn't move them. it was pretty much worn off by the time I had my son a half hour of pushing. with my second the epidural was horrible I was crying and it hurt so bad so I think it depends on who puts it in. I want as numb I could move my legs this time. I started to feel my contractions and knew this time that it was time to push. I pushed twice and my daughter was out. the epidural worked a little longer because I didnt push as long I didnt feel them stitch me like I did with my son. that was nice. but each time was totally different. I think I'd be able to push out a baby without the epidural but I couldn't take my contractions without it that's forsure. good luck and congratulations.
