bleeding on pill

hi i’m on the combined pill i’m like halfway through the three week pack and about 4 days ago i started bleeding. it was after protected sex (so i thought it could possibly be from that) and well at first it was light and it was brown so old blood so i just figured it’s blood from last period and now its getting a bit heavier. it’s like i’m on my period except the blood is definitely old blood because it’s not red it’s brown. i took a pill 10 hours late about two weeks ago and another one an hour early this week so is it because of the irregular pill taking? or is this something i need to check out? btw my last period finished 17 days ago
