Long distance relationships

So I’ve been friends with this boy who lives in America for a while now ( I live in England ) and we both like eachother but we just don’t know whether me and him would work due to distance. Should I give up on the idea of me and him having a long distance relationship or should I just keep waiting and see how things go? 🤦🏼‍♀️ I am only 17 (turning 18 in 4-5 months) and he is 18 turning 19...
