Do you expect other people to pay for gender reveal party and baby shower?

My sister in law is expecting a big surprise for both occasions. Decor, cake, food, drinks the whole shebang. Which is great, except she’s expecting me to pay for it all. My mom is very broke so she won’t be able to help so much. Her family isn’t in the picture. My husband and I are okay, but trying to start saving for our own family. I’m just trying to get opinions on if this is what people usually do or if you’d pay for one of them yourselves or help?

I think if someone offers to throw it for the expectant mother then they pay for it. You don't volunteer to throw a party for someone than say "hey by the way I need your wallet to pay for it" If I have to pay for the shower myself I would rather throw it myself so I know for sure its what I want and what I like. Ive thrown bridal showers and baby showers for close friends and family and never asked them to pay for it themselves.

if she wants a big extravagant gender reveal or baby shower then she needs to pitch in & help pay for it & not expect other people to do it. now it's different if somebody volunteers & says hey I'm going to do it I'll throw your shower don't worry about it blah blah blah then okay but nobody should ever expect somebody else to pay for their parties just because it's for a baby doesn't change anything. & if she is expecting you to pay for it well then that means you can do it your way with decorations you can afford to pay for.
my big sister paid for my gender reveal party but that's because she wanted to do it & she would not let me pay for anything for it. but I didn't expect her to do it. 
good luck with her, she sounds like she's going to be a momzilla if you tell her no.... I hope it works out for you.

The people expecting the baby pay for gender reveals.  Usually family gets together to pay for the shower so it’s not a huge burden for one person.  You may have to tell her that you can’t afford to pay for it alone and if her family can’t help she needs to.  Showers are expensive.  She should be paying for the reveal entirely.  That’s the parent’s choice to do that so they need to pay for it.

Tell her she’s nuts lol wth actually I think the couple should (if they choose to have either of these parties) host and pay for it themselves. I like to do things on my own and the way I want to and would never expect anyone to throw any party for me.

I expect the hosts to pay for my shower because they are the ones who are throwing it for me. It was the same for my bridal shower, mother and bridesmaids planned and footed the bill. If I was allowed to be involved in any of the planning I would have contributed, but the whole thing was supposed to be a surprise, so no payment from me.
I wouldn’t do a gender reveal but I’m pretty sure it’s normally the parents who throw it, which means they are the hosts, which means they pay for it.

I hosted and paid for the gender reveal but we went the traditional route for the baby shower. My mom is hosting and paying because everything is going to be a surprise for me. I just provided the guest list.

I never even expected anyone to throw or pay for my baby shower. My mom wanted to throw me a baby shower and We still helped her pay for everything. 
Personally, I feel like it is rude to expect someone else to pay for something you want. Like if they have offered then that’s one thing, but just expecting them to do this big extravagant thing is ridiculous.
