NYC hospital/doctor choice problems
Hopefully some of you in NYC can help! I live in the Rockaways and have been getting my prenatal care in Brooklyn. I'm 14 weeks along now. Problem 1: I like my doctor, but he's only in Brooklyn 2 days a week, and he's the only person in their office who is fluent in English. (The office serves an almost-entirely Chinese population.) I've had problems and saw the other doctor a couple of times and couldn't understand her. I'm afraid that I'll give birth when he's out of town and end up with a doctor I can't communicate with. I'd also like to consider changing to a midwife. (I'd stay with this doc as a Gyno afterward.) Problem 2: My insurance is of the devil: MetroPlus. I want to give birth at Maimonides, and doctors for various specialties are covered there, but no midwives or Obgyns who deliver babies. Several Obgyns are covered there, but they're only for prenatal care, not delivery. If I show up at Maimonides to give birth, it'll be covered, but it'll be with a stranger. Lutheran has a midwife clinic, but every review I saw for giving birth atLutheran said, "Eh, it was ok. I only went there because I love my doctor." There was only one midwife covered by my insurance who works in a private clinic (so I had hope she might be able to go to Maimonides), but they just merged with another company and no longer take my insurance. What would you do, other than scream at the universe?
