Should We Be Encouraging Sexual Relationships Among People With Intellectual Disabilities?
So there's this reality TV show called Born This Way, and it basically chronicles the lives of a group of young people with intellectual disabilities (Down's Syndrome). Many of these individuals express a desire to date and have sex. Although I understand that the intellectually disabled have sexual desires and have the right to express those desires, I am sometimes concerned that perhaps these individuals are being encouraged too much by the media to partake in sexual activities they don't fully understand or are simply mimicking the dating behaviors of those around them. Do you think people with intellectual disabilities should be allowed to date without supervision? Should they be trusted to manage their own birth control options?
