Is it excusable?

So this morning i was scrolling through my IG time line. And one of the people i follow posted a clip of some woman expressing how she feels about contributing to black business, as a respose to the assault in a nail salon in Brooklyn. (Tbh idk what that entire story is feel free to comment what happened) while the video itself was very moving and informational i have no opposition to that. What didn't sit right with me was the comments under it as well as the caption, reffering to asians (yellow folks, or yellow___). Its my understanding that this is considerably a racist/ prejudice slur. So my question is this, if this is considered a racial slur, why is it ok (if ever) to use it when trying to make a point as to why youre boycotting asian owned nail salons?

I’m honestly never quite sure about how these things are considered in the English language but I do know in german it’s offensive to call Asian people yellow.

Love seeing entitled people saying what it insulting to other races or not.
I am married to a chinese man, from China and they call themselves yellow all the time. They say white people have “white skin”, asians have “yellow skin”. It is not insulting nor degrading to them. They refer to “foreigners” (white/black people) according to their skin colour and to themselves they refer to as being yellow. My husband and his family always joke that our kids are “custard” because they are mix between two races😅

I don’t consider it racist or derogatory at all. All my Asian friends don’t consider it racist. So I don’t think non Asians have any right to say what is or isn’t racist when it comes to Asians 🤷🏻‍♀️

Never. You can boycott a business if you want but you still dont have to throw in racial slurs. Like its never okay to use the n-word for black people as a racial slur, its not okay to use racial slurs for other races.

I don’t think it’s appropriate to refer to Asian people as yellow people. I think it’s different if Asian people choose to use that within their community. Now I sometimes call myself yellow (I’m not Asian tho) because I do have yellow undertones. My friends and family have even called me yellow before. Sometimes it’s just used to describe skin color, but again, I don’t think it’s exactly appropriate to call a whole race yellow. Especially in this case of boycotting Asian owned salons, it comes across as purposely degrading.

It’s only racist if your not that race, the same thing with black people and the N word. It’s okay for black people to call each other that, and it’s okay for Asians to call each other yellow because it’s THEIR culture. I think people should Let people have their own things and terms of endearments and other people should butt out. 
Let people do what they want/say what they want.

I don’t consider “yellow” to be an appropriate descriptor of a person. My friend was born in China and she and I had a long conversation about it last year and she agreed that every one of her family members took great offense to being called “yellow” because that’s not what they were. They were Asian, but they actually had dark brown skin, so whenever “yellow” was used toward them it was in complete stereotype and it was completely inaccurate. I also currently live with an Asian family as their PA and if I were to ever refer to them as yellow I would be fired immediately. They are not yellow people. If someone who is Asian wants to refer to themselves as that then that’s fine but I don’t encourage that anyone engage in that behavior in reference to others as not everyone is going to take it kindly. I have also literally never had a time when I needed to use “yellow people” in my language throughout all of my years of working with Asian families and friends, I cannot even think of a situation in which I would describe someone as being a yellow person.

Is it excusable?
