Sore ankle from running

Hi I've been training for a race for the past 8 weeks. I started from the very bottom (the start level was optional because the plan depends on if you're new to running or experienced) just to ensure that I wouldn't get injured. I've run on and off for the past three years, so I'm not necessarily a "beginner" but I'm not an expert. Anyway, after yesterday's run my ankle started to feel funny, and today it's sore. I'm going to take the day off and do RICE, but any tips or suggestions? Is a sore ankle potentially dangerous, or did I catch it in time? By missing today I'm not cutting out a run, I'm just pushing it back a day so it shouldn't hurt my training plan overall. I've also been stretching and doing yoga consistently so I'm worried about why this pain started to occur....
