Public shaming Good or Bad?

Hello everyone.

So where I live (London, Canada) there is this couple who left their 12 week old puppy in the bathroom with food and water (that evaporated) while they went on a two week vacation. The puppy was rescued and adopted by a family...the couple was punished with a hefty fine and can't ever have a another pet. Their picture was put on facebook and now they are being publicly shamed. My question for everyone...should they be publicly shamed? I mean people are basically telling them that they should die...what do you think.

Well this is awful, and they should never have pets again, but I don't support public shaming. I haven't seen any evidence that it works the way it's intended. I think it encourages vigilantism, and if we're talking about callout culture style shaming, it too often strips situations of context.

Death threats are unnecessary, but I think broadcasting this is a good thing.

They are adults and knew what they did was wrong. Why shouldn't they be called out on it? If they abused a child it would be put out by the media. I don't see a difference.

Just like any other type of abusive person, I want to see their picture so I know who NOT to trust. Death threats are a bit much since the puppy was rescued.

I don't think that death threats are really necessary, but how stupid can you be. Two weeks?!? You're leaving a puppy alone in a weeks worth of shit - for another week! Call me a bleeding heart, but they deserve more than a fine and a ban on future torture.

I love animals and the cruelty they put this poor puppy through boils my blood. So my first thought was: Yes, the deserve to be shamed. But than I thought more about it and thought how awful to be publicly shamed like that. I don't think they deserve to be bullied like that. They definitely should be punished, but it's too harsh for others to threaten their lives.

I'm not a huge animal person but two weeks?! That's ridiculous. I'm guessing after that long dog drank all the freaking water and it didn't just evaporate. I have two dogs, again not a big animal lover, but they need water like 3 times a day and I'd feel terrible leaving them for one day!

What they did was lacked common sense and was cruel, they deserve the fine and decree. Public shaming? No. Not in this case. Stupidity alone isn't a reason to tear someone down.

This is terrible. How could you leave a puppy alone for 2 weeks? With no water? I'm dumbfounded that someone would honestly think that would be okay? Im. Ớt surprised someone went public that's neglect and animal abuse
