Natural mama question?

I just watched 'the business of being born' and now I'm contimplating a birth center. Does anyone have a birth story about a birth center, positive or negative? I need to look into if my insurance will cover it... Let me know. I'm a FTM and anything will be helpful.

I know there are a lot of cons with going to a hospital. However, a close friend of mine almost died from an undiagnosed placenta previa when she gave birth. If she wasn't in a good hospital, it would have been a horrible day. I think you should always go to a place that can help you or your baby if (God forbid), something goes wrong.

Hi Cassandra - my mother was a nurse-midwife who did births both at home and birth center. Huge advocate! I can't count the number of women I encountered who found their natural births empowering, safe, and uncomplicated by medical interventions. I will be working with a midwife myself rather than an OB-GYN. Very few clients needed to be transferred to the hospital, but those that needed it were close by and in time. Obviously, only choose a birth center if you have no indications of a complicated birth (twins, medical complications, etc). Some hospitals have birth centers attached, attended by nurse-midwives, which could be a middle ground if you wish!
