Extended period

So just needed some advice. I have a son who is 5 I always had normal periods that came every 29 days exactly. 3 years ago I had a period for almost a year straight and the dr just brushed it off it was painful most times and got to the point I couldn’t work after that I missed my period for a year and a half. Now I have had my period for about three months and I don’t understand what is happening. I don’t have insurance and have been paying to go to the doctors and they are giving me the run around ended up going to the emergency room and they gave me progesterone and it did not help. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m 24 years old and this cycle started out of nowhere when I was 21
