Bleeding during sex

Okay, so I haven’t had sex in a while but I specifically remember my hymen being gone. Granted I’ve only been with one other guy and it’s been YEARS since I was with him. Today I slept with a guy and I bled. A lot. I’ve never been so embarrassed. And I’m not exactly sure why I bled. Does anyone have an idea of why? He was bigger than I expected but he was gentle, could that have something to do with it?
