Nipple shields?

I am currently pregnant. With my 1st 2 I tried to breast feed but they never latched right and didnt have support. This time around I've been looking into q lit of things and have a huge support of sister in law and husband's friend that all breastfeed. Question is does anyone use the nipple shields how did they work with you I'm really thinking if buying some and putting in the hospital bag.?

The hospital will have them if you need them. I strongly recommend holding off on using them unless a lactation consultant recommends it. An RN just plopped one on me literally right after I gave birth because my son didn’t latch right away and I was stuck wearing them for a few weeks until I could wean my baby off of it. The LC that I saw was appalled they put one on me right away and said there are several ways to get a baby to latch before going that route. They are great if you need them but a huge pain and definitely adds a lot of stress to BF. I didn’t need them at all but the RN saw them as a quick fix

They can provide one for you at the hospital if you decide you want to try it. I tried one for a while with my oldest. It’s basically a silicone cover that suctions over your nipple and areola that comes to more of a point than your nipple naturally does. My oldest was a preemie so his mouth was tiny and it was easier for him to get the shield in than my breast tissue. If you use then you can eventually wean off of it.

I use one for my 12 week old that lactation gave me, my lo will latch fine on one side without it but won’t latch on the other side without it, it is annoying to have to have it at all times but thankful that I’m able to nurse her, I’d wait until you need it to use it 🤷‍♀️

They gave me one at the hospital since my nipples are somewhat flat 😕 I don’t mind it tho its been an absolute life saver! It also helps if you get chapped nipples so it won’t hurt as much.

Ask your hospital, OB, or pediatricians office if they know of or are associated with any support groups. That has been a life saver!!! None of the people I knew went through any of the issues I did so I thought I had a support system but they couldn’t help me through those issues.
