Experience with sperm donor?

So my OBGYN referred me to a fertility specialist who recommended doing IVF with ICSI. My husbands sperm numbers are really bad, and not just part of it, all aspects. Financially IVF isn’t in the cards for us. We are thinking about using a sperm donor. Anyone have experience with that? Where’d you find your donor? How did your husband feel about it? Did you do any sort of counseling before you decided to go that route? When do you plan on telling the child, if at all? Any advice? Could really use some input.

We used a sperm donor for iui due to my hubs low sperm count.  Our office gave us cryobanks they have worked with in the past.  We weren’t happy with any of the donors or how the websites ran, so we googled other banks and looked at them.  We picked one from xytex, located in California I believe. We’re in Wisconsin. 
My hubs didn’t care.  He wanted a family and was willing to go about any means necessary to do so. He is mixed and he wasn’t happy with any of the African American donors so we chose a white one. We didn’t do counseling or anything before.

We used a sperm donor from Seattle sperm bank. Get ready to make lots of decisions! I was very overwhelmed at the start. Some clinics do facial matching so you send them a picture of your husband and they tell you which ones most closely resemble him. Then you can try and match personality. The other thing I was surprised about was how expensive it was. Be prepared to spend about 1000 per vial. They use 2 vials per iui. 
We didn't want to go with anyone we knew. We felt it would be awkward if we told the child one day and it was someone they knew. The clinics also have open Id donors. This means that when your child turns 18 they can get the donors name from the clinic and contact him if they choose.
I also opted to use a clinic to be more legally safe. There are a bunch of waivers to sign and they really cover all the bases.

We needed to use Donor sperm as my husband is azoospermic. We looked at the donors available from the sperm bank and weren’t happy with any of them. My husband is mixed race and we were really  wanting to maintain that heritage moving forward, which is difficult with sperm donors as the options are limited, especially here in Australia.
In the end, we have decided to use sperm donated by my husbands half brother. It wasn’t a decision we made hastily, and here in Aus you have to go through a lot of legislated counseling etc before you can use / access Donor sperm through clinics. We have taken the time to grieve the loss of not having children the traditional way, and we’re at peace with the cards the universe has dealt us.
We are just waiting for the sperm to come out of quarantine and we start IUI next month.
My only advice is, that is you do use a known donor as opposed to an anonymous one, make sure the laws in your state etc provide you protection you need moving forward and seek legal advice; the peace of mind is worth it.
As for how my husband feels, we are excited to be parents one day and feel fortunate that we’ve been able to find a solution that means our children will still be genetically related to my husband. It is a huge decision that took a lot of time to get right, both within ourselves and practically.

Just make sure you man is really cool with the idea frist , talk about it frist , my hubby asked someone close to us to be a sperm donor for us
