Is the Glucose test really necessary?

I wasn’t able to do it on the day of my appointment when I was around 24 weeks because of insurance issues and my doctor says that there’s a time gap to take it, I’m 29 weeks and 2 days and I’ve called my insurance several times before and they say it’s going to take a long time to get everything sorted so I feel like I’ve missed my chance. And I cant hurry that process more than I’ve tried, and my doctor just tells me to get it done. Like I seriously can’t do anything else than what I’ve done. So I’m worried.

If your baby is measuring really big and growing really fast I would be worried that u have gestational diabetes. Everyone is required to take it for your babies sake.
Does your insurance back pay? Could you go take it and then once your insurance goes through you can call them and have them pay it. I would also ask how much it is without insurance

I'm not taking it this pregnancy and I didn’t in my last one either. I am eating a GD diet and working out 3 times a week. This is the treatment anyway for GD. Rarely they will prescribe insulin. I just want to watch my weight because I gained 60 pounds last pregnancy due to bed rest and a broken foot. The biggest risks involved are large babies and shoulder dystocia. Your baby could also come out with some blood sugar problems of its own. In a study done in 2014 of 25,000 women eating healthy and exercising did show to make a difference in the size of the baby when the mother had GD. This study also took stillbirth out as an outcome because it was nonexistent in their findings. Many people on these boards will try to tell you that you will kill your baby by skipping the test. My biggest issue with the test is it is not true to life. It is a ton of sugar that is just grown into your body. The test also does not diagnose you with GD it just gives your doctor a good idea if you have it. This is why there is such a large false positive on the 1-hour test. My mom had four kids and failed the one hour test with all of us and then passed the 3-hour test. It really is not reliable. I knew there had to be a better way to go about it. So I did a ton of research. Recently the ACOG has released a statement saying that if you don’t have more than two of the risk factors you don’t have to take the test. The risk factors are being over the age of 25, over a 30 BMI, having previous babies that weighed over 9 pounds,  you were more than 9 pounds at birth,  you’ve had blood sugar issues in the past, you have 1st their family members with blood sugar issues and finally you are part of ethnic groups with a higher risk factor. These ethnic groups include Pacific Islander, African American, and Latino. Only 5.6% or 200,000 pregnant women have it every year. If you still want to do some form of testing there are many other great options. Some mothers choose to do finger sticks after meals for a week and keep track that way. This is a great option because it is true to life and allows a better picture. Other people just eat a doctor specified meal and do a blood draw. My family doctor said he offers 42 jelly beans and then a blood draw. Do research on other methods and bring them up to your doctor. Many doctors offices also check for sugar in your urine during every prenatal appointment so if that showed an issue you could always reevaluate. This is your choice. Know your research and bring up your concerns with your doctor.

I didn't do it with my last pregnancy and everything was just fine.  I'm not doing it with this one either.  I can't keep that nasty sugar drink down without throwing up.  Also, your OBGYN tests your urine for glucose at your prenatal visits so I really wouldn't stress about it.

Your insurance should cover it. Worst case, it will count towards your deductible. I would just do the test. Very worst case, you end up paying out of pocket and submit it to your insurance for any reimbursement they might offer. This is a very standard prenatal test and should not be an issue with your insurance. Good luck!
