When do you start lactating?

I’m only 23 weeks but a first time mommy and wondering when I’ll start lactating?

Your milk doesn’t come in until after baby is born. Right now your body is making colostrum, which is what baby needs first. For some women they will start leaking this during pregnancy, other women will not. Whether you leak colostrum or not has no indication of what your milk supply will be once it comes in, so don’t get discouraged or worried just because you aren’t leaking.

I started leaking colostrum about 30 weeks with my first. I have still been breastfeeding her through till about 2 weeks ago when we weaned & since stopping, my milk has changed over to colostrum already. I’m 26 weeks tomorrow.

I started with colostrum at 14 weeks. It’s not much and not everyday. But all pregnancies are different.

I had a few (2 or 3) leaks in my last few weeks of my first pregnancy, but that was it. Went on to have a great supply and breastfed two years. Don’t worry if you haven’t yet (I’ve only not been breastfeeding since May and I’m not even leaking yet), just maybe keep a clean top in your car, or purchase some nursing pads just in case it happens while you’re out.
