Late period and spotting

So my period was supposed to be here on Tuesday. So far I’ve only been spotting and not enough to need a pad and it’s not even every time I go to the bathroom but have been doing this since Wednesday. I’m used to my period being right on track if not a day early or late here or there. My boyfriend and I have been using protection and have always used it (we are both strict on it). Has anyone else had this issue before? I called the gynecologist and he said to take a home pregnancy test and if it’s negative just wait it out. Just makes me nervous. Not that I wouldn’t be upset about a baby just that we aren’t ready for it. Any advice or anything would be appreciated
