to prenatal screening test or not??

that is thee question! so i got my first ultrasound done yesterday at 7w7d and it was beautiful. i heard the baby’s heart beat and saw my little angel on the screen. i instantly cried and felt truly pregnant. following the ultrasound there was a bunch of questions from my partner and i to our doctor and she asked us a lot about us as well. she told us on our next visit in about 3 weeks to decide if we would like to opt in to get the CA prenatal screening test done or not. she explained to me that it’s test for abnormalities etc. ive talked to a few gfs that have had babies and most did not opt in. i’m 35 just turned 35 a few weeks ago. this is my first pregnancy.  and i’m not sure what to do. ladies- what are your thoughts to this testing? is it a disadvantage to my baby if i don’t take it?

Why not do it?  It's non invasive. If say your baby has downs syndrome, you'll know to have its heart development monitored carefully. If you wait, then the testing is invasive eg amniocentesis, or if baby is born with an issue now baby has to go through diagnostic testing. I saw zero disadvantages to getting it done.

I think genetic testing is definitely the way to go. In case something is found you have time to mentally prepare, rather than taking it all in during the moment.

We will be doing the genetic testing to just to keep our minds at ease! There’s nothing wrong with you doing it or not doing it’s all about preference :)

I am getting this done next week. I'm 35 this is my 6th pregnancy, my midwife said it was totally up to me if I wanted it done. I opted to go ahead and make an appointment for it since it is non invasive and quick blood work.

I was 34 when I found out I was pregnant and opted not to get it done. The test could show an indication that there might be an issue with the baby but not give you a definitive answer. I didn't want that worry and possibility of needing further testing. We waited for the anatomy scan at 20 weeks where things are more definitive. Because of my age I got a level 4 ultrasound that is more detailed.

Why would you not have it? It’s not dangerous to the baby so I honestly can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t have if tbh? A friend of mine just found out at 11 weeks that her baby had Edwards Syndrome. It was heartbreaking for them but it would have been a lot more tragic if they hadn’t gone ahead with the testing.

I’m not sure if the CA prenatal screening is the same as NIPT. NIPT testing is noninvasive (just a quick blood draw) with no side effects or possible complications. They recommend it to women 35 and up.. I’m only 22 and I had it done (because my insurance covered it) it will allow you to see the chances your baby has of Trisomy 21 (Down’s syndrome), Trisomy 18 and Trisomy 13... It also tells the baby’s gender (which was the only reason I cared to do it)... The test I had done was called MaterniT PLUS core, but there are several others that are similar to this test... Personally, I wouldn’t do an invasive test because there are often risks of miscarriage. I knew that it wouldn’t matter to me if my baby did have a genetic abnormality, it wouldn’t have changed my decision to carry to full term. So, the invasive testing was sort of pointless, in my personal opinion... I do recommend the NIPT testing though.. It’s been very fun knowing my baby’s a girl at only 11 weeks!!!

Its only to see if your baby have any abnormalities like Down syndrome that might be found throughout your dna , its fine! I think you’ll feel much more aware of what baby might have then not knowing at all
